Mississippi is a southern coastal state and named for the river that forms its western boundary. The name is thought to have been derived from the Chippewa words "mici zibi" meaning "great river". Mississippi was organized as a territory in 1798 and was the 20th state admitted into the union in 1817.

Mississippi is bordered to the north by Tennessee, to the east by Alabama, to the south by the Gulf of Mexico, and to the west (across the Mississippi River) by Louisiana and Arkansas. The economy is largely based on agriculture (lumber, cotton, poultry, cattle, soybeans, and others) though tourism is an increasingly important source of revenue, especially near the gambling centers along the coast.

Mississippi is characterized by five distinct regions (see map, upper left): 1. Delta; 2. Hills; 3. River; 4. Pines; and 5. Coastal. The climate is generally considered humid subtropical with long, hot summers and short, mild winters, though there are some considerable regional variations. Hurricane season is from June through November, and Mississippi is in the path of any storm that passes north through the Gulf of Mexico.
